The New Zealand Christmas Tree

The Pohutukawa Tree.
It flowers just in time for Christmas.
I saw the first flowers out on a tree on Friday.
The flowers vary from scarlet to deep, dark red.
The trees form multiple trunks which make them great for climbing,
only don't try this when they're flowering - the pollen will have you itching all over!

Climbing conifers causes itching all over as well (though for different reasons). Christmas on both antipodes has at least something in common.

Beautiful
When I lived in So. California, there were trees like this. I don't remember what they were called, there. We had had many Australian and New Zealand trees. There were Chinese "Tree of Heaven" trees, Polly's favorite, eucalyptus, and my favorite, Jacarandas.
Up here our Christmas trees are - Christmas Trees!!

Hi Gomad, hope there is no itching and much safety on your work travels to Mumbai - hey, the English cricket team has just gone back to India, huggles and concerned care.

Hi Priscilla - last xmas the jacarandas were still in flower when I got up to the parents home, and the pohutukawas were just coming out, Gentle purples and many shades of red all over the place. Huggles and care also to you and Polly (and Peggy and her family).

Super hellos, dear John.G,
One day I will get back over to England - and will come and cook for you and your dear Dad. My dear Dad (another Gordon) will become 78 years young next week.

Huggles, love and care, dear Matey

They're stunning when in flower - we have one next to the pool - I've never seen it so full of flowers.

They are just lovely and remind mum of when she spent six weeks over there in November 2006. She said they were spectacular. She wishes they had them over here in France

I love your Christmas trees. I planted one about 12 years ago but it has never had more than 5 or 6 flowers on it. Maybe it didn't like being planted here in Sth. Australia.
Do you know if it requires any special treatment to get it into bloom?
Your pictures are beautiful
