Happy New Year

A wonderful sight in the New Zealand Summer is the flowering of the Pohutukawa tree.

Known as "the New Zealand Christmas tree", the bright red flowers appear in December
and continue in January.

The trees have multiple trunks which makes them great to climb ...

but don't try it while they flower as Pohutukawa pollen is very itchy!

It is always lovely to see the patches of red amongst the usual greenery.

Hi Michelle, that is beautiful !!!

My NZ Christmas tree has flowered this year, but not as many flowers as yours.

Happy & Prosperous New Year to Yourself & Zebbycat.

PS My daughter came to Adelaide from Alice Springs for the Christmas break, couldn't find anywhere to board her Puss so she had to fly him down as part of her "baggage" ... don't you love it :))

Oh my goodness! That is such a beautiful tree. God is so amazing. What a joy that you get to see such beauty....especially this time of year. For us January is very cold and blustery and brown.

Blessings to you and Zebby-cat.

I don't have one here and no space for one either but I have left several behind at other residences. I might ask the council about one for the paper road beside us - a Rata probably for this far south.

The New Zealand Christmas Tree is very pretty indeed! But I know our dear Zebby Cat is not climbing it when it's flowering or otherwise. The dear lad looks to me like he has sense enough to keep all 4 feet firmly on the ground.

Welcome home, Michelle. I hope Zebby has forgiven you for sending him to the Cattery for his annual visit (who am I kidding; we both know they spoil him silly there)!

Thanks so much for the lovely, lovely photos! My son has been singing "Pohutekawa Tree" all Christmas - I think it is now his favourite Christmas song!

thanks for your new year's greetings - and may it be a happy new one for you too

you have really lifted my spirits with these fotos - my favorite tree will always be the pohutukawa; the red blooms contrast so well against the dark green foliage, nothing like the shades of green that i'm used to seeing in the olive trees we are surrounded by

Dearest Med Kiwi - at least the olives produce something edible! okay - so there is pohutukawa honey, but only from dedicated apiarists (and it is very expensive).

The full tree photos were taken in Parliament grounds and looking up Hill Street (enroute to good old Wellington Girls' College), taken as I headed to the Thorndon New World supermarket that is on the old brewery site!

Sending much care and many warm huggles, Michelle
