Today's harvest:
Yes, I made fried green tomatoes for dinner. I'm getting a good handful of beans each day however the zucchinis are reluctant (these below were picked over a week ago - nowt ready to harvest since).
How about this for a little gem squash - it was utterly delicious.
He is a complete carnivore and, when fed to his requirements
(dry cat food, wet cat food and a little fresh meat daily),
is happy snoozing away the day on his battered, beloved quilt
(the battering by feline teeth is all his own work - I'm so proud!)
Postscript: Our Tuesday, the 18th of January, has been horribly hot, humid and overcast. The temperature got to 29C which is a heatwave for Wellington - a Summer's day is usually between 20 and 23C at the most with many back at 18 or 19C. Still my darling chose to sleep beneath his battered quilt.
At almost 2.00am on Wednesday it is still 20C here with 98% humidity - furry-clad Zebby is back under his quilty comforter, snoozling away, while I'm still wilting with the weather, no way ready for sleep with the hot and humid conditions - it is even too hot and muggy for knitting!

The veg look good!
Gorgeous veggies - and I envy your fried green tomatoes.
I love seeing your produce. It's a reminder to me that in a few short months we will be able to plant again! Silly Zebby, under the quilt. I would think the lovely fur coat would be enough.
Cats seem to have no idea that it is just too hot, Cody lies sprawled outside on 35C+ days revelling in the heat. You just wait on those zukes, its either famine or feast.
I envy the harvest but not the humidity
The veg looked delicious.
Zeb cat adorable and the weather freaky (like many countries right now.)
It is 34% F here but it is nighttime and there is going to be a frost overnight.
34%F is a little over freezing in C.

Nuts in May
That's one good looking contented cat you have there.
Veg look good too.
Nice veg. Wish mine were a bit more ahead but the weather is a bit freaky here too and sun is in rather short supply. I do have tomatoes however and silver beet.
Hi to Zebby in his over heated nest :)

It is always so nice to enjoy your own home grown produce, it always tastes so much better. Hugs to you both Diane xx
I have to confess...I did a search for a temperature conversion so I could relate to what kind of temperatures you are experiencing. (blush on my face) It is the humidity that is making the air really hard and heavy isn't it? Because it is not normally that warm, do people in your region typically not having cooling systems in their homes? I still hear people around here grumble about air coolers and say it isn't hot enough for long enough here to warrant the spending of such a device. But truly I love my window air units and run them as soon as temps get up to 80 degrees.
Your garden squash looks too cute to eat. Fried green tomatoes...I have to confess to never having them even though my dad's side of the family is all from the deep south. Funny.
Zebby doesn't like veggies? If I had a garden I would have to put a fence up to keep Conguito and Kekoa out of it. Carrots and potatoes are their daily training treats as well as green beans, cucumbers and apples.
Blessings to you today Michelle
Hello Michelle
firstly thanks for the email - I will answer it - promise (sometime lol)
The veg I put in all got washed away in the really heavy rain we had at the end of last year so it greengrocers for us at the moment.
Have to say Zebby does look very comfortable lounging around on his soft bed - wonder what he's thinking about. We had some ghastly humid days last week then it went colder and today is sunny and dry but theres still a little chill in the wind (o/night was about 12c)
Take care
Cathy
Hi Mick, the veg look great! but I have to boast that I still have cherry tomatoes ripening on my 3rd floor windowsill, in London, in January!
Your friend Jules asks about cooling systems in NZ homes. Well when Mick and I were growing up (we're sisters) nobody ever had cooling systems, or central heating for that matter. I moved to London years ago which is quite a different climate and always told my British friends that most of NZ is mild - not really hot or cold. Summer days at 29C were not the norm when I was a kid. 22 was more like it. Dunno if it's global warming?

Darling Liz - I have yet to display MY tomatoes as the multitudes are not yet ripe (hence my recent green tomato feast). Ha - wait until I show the apple cucumbers, multiples and more all growing very nicely as the bumblebees really like their flowers.
Oh for a sunny windowsill all year around (Zebby agrees).

For everyone reading here - 27C is a real heatwave and really unpleasant for us in Wellington. So you can imagine how awful 29C and 98% humidity was for us.
To shock us more on Thursday we got to only 13C at 2.00pm!
Now, at 0.45am on Friday it is 12C yet feeling warmer inside - hooray, the underfloor insulation works (too bloody well on hot days....)
I'm about ready to garden. I sowed some seeds for transplants the other day
Hello! You saw that in my world, the snow came down hard and then you described your crazy NZ weather and called it "barmy"! I thought for I minute you meant to type 'balmy', but that's NOT what those temps are LOL! Barmy, What a great word!!
HA, I laughed out loud to read that you are so proud of Zebby's toothartwork on his beddy.
Try to stay cool...uh, or warm as the day may say!
Oh, and those veggies are mouth-watering, great gardening :-) Would Zebby like some fresh catnip??
love and huggles,
Elizabeth, Kitterz and the Gizmo
Love the home grown veg - looks amazing. We just started growing some stuff last summer with mixed results but nothing tastes better!
Thanks for leaving such a lovely msg on my blog - it was heartwarming and very generous. Good luck with climbing those 54 steps, I'll be rooting for you!
As you were writing that it got to 36 here in Hawkes Bay! But it wasn't as humid. We have had some humidity this year, though, which is unusual.
What prompted me to a (rare) comment, though, was you saying that you'd done friend green tomatoes. I thought that was just a song! I didn't really think that was a recipe. I now know how wrong I was! I've found lots of recipes. Might try that 'cos I LOVE tomatoes.
Veggies look super-- can't wait for planting time here in USA.
Found you thru Mitchell--- he is going to do veggies also, this year ! Fun blog, and love Zebby !
Jan
Dear Janet - lovely to have your comment. Veggie gardening in containers has been so rewarding - especially as my Zebby Rescue Cat doesn't eat veggies, bless him and his wussy, rescued affectionate self, Michelle xxx
