It is kind of noisy in Wellington tonight as people all around let off fireworks for Guy Fawkes night. And very soon it will be very noisy - the public display is due to start at 9.00pm, in about 9m min utes time. I can't see it from my place but I sure can hear it.
In past years I'd wander up the street a bit to watch it all, but these days I stay here with Zebbycat to ensure he isn't frightened. Yes Zeb is well and truely shut in for the night.
(Postscript: The wonders of a tummy rub! The lad happily purred away for the 20 minutes of bangs and booms that almost shook the ground. Still lying down, he is contently washing his face. Yes, of course I am a complete pussycat-pushover)

My son called me last night to wish me a Happy Guy Fawkes and ask if we were doing a bonfire...after I assured him that this was 2009 not 1979 (the year we moved to England) I was told that he still has a mini bonfire in honor of the day...kids...go figure...

ps
happy Guy Fawkes...light a bonfire for me!
November in NZ isn't a good time for fireworks etc... unlike over in the UK.
Always worried here because my inner city home is surrounded by town green belt trees. The Maori Matariki (new year) celebration in June would be a better time and place for fireworks to me.
Not dry heading into Summer, and dark far earlier than 9.30, as is now - too late on a school night yet the littlies are up for the bangs and booms.
What is Guy Fawkes night? I've been wondering that all day.
Hi Mickle
Thanks for your visits at my place. I've just dug a hole through the Earth to drop this message through to you LOL
We, not I for I am far too ancient, but the youngsters in England have just started with all their bangs and wooshes and rockets frightening the life out of the poor animals. Yet I remember how I enjoyed it all once - must be getting old!!! LOL
Whilst writing I would be extremely honoured if you would agree to appear on the Sunday Roast column. Hope you agree - you would be a very popular choice. Please email at

My big sisiter, Maggie May says you are a lovely lass! ~ Eddie
Thor doesn't like fireworks, either. He offers Zeb congratulations on having properly trained his human to care for such an important kitty!
Hi Michelle, We in Oz are not allowed to purchase fire works without a permit. This is because of the danger to kids that are likely to do stupid things with them and also, if the grass is dry, the danger of starting a bushfire. That means we only get to see the big bangs at an organised display such as New Year or Australia Day. I have fond memories of Guy Fawkes when I was a child though, lighting bonfires that we had collected rubbish for, for weeks ahead of the night. Cooking potatoes in the coals and trying to melt pennies (never successful at the penny bit) but the spuds with the burnt black skins were yummy.
The other reason I remember the day for is that its our wedding anniversary....another night that went off with a big bang !!! :-)
You get a Holiday? Wow! England is a bit behind in more ways than one.
Glad Zebbycat kept safely inside.
Nuts in May
Maggie - no, we don't get a holiday. I'm all for public fireworks displays only if fireworks must be let off in early November. Hope you're doing okay, Mickle xxx
Hmmm...now I need to google this holiday and figure out what it is.
Bon fires and fireworks....sounds like fun.
Good job Mr. Zebby for being so utterly content.
