Back in August I posted (several times) about Valerie Vili, a young NZ athlete who was competing in Shotput at the Beijing Olmpics. Valerie won the Gold.~
Tonight in our annual sporting awards Valerie was named Sportswoman of the year. Her coach and mentor, Kirsten Hellier, was named coach of the year (yes, that's them pictured above).
~

Great to see her looking so happy, and so glamorous. The NZ Sportsman of the year went to the 2008 Indy Car champion, Scott Dixon.

Hello Mickle!
Thank you so much for your lovely comment.
You made me smile with your words and had me cocking an ear to see if I could hear the purring.
So sweet of you to say those things.
Sciatica - ugh! So very painful!
I have 7 discs that have disintegrated due to too many beatings and a couple of bad skiing accidents while racing. The result is that they are bulging out and pressing on whatever holds in the spine. So incredibly painful all the time.
I had injections last summer. OMG! Now THAT was painful! But! It helped. I've been in far less pain since then and get about easier - take less painkillers overall. So I'm not complaining. Just hoping not to have to do it again too soon. It does wear off. And - they don't put you under for it - oh no! They just make you lay very still and slide a needle into your spine between the discs (or what's left of them) and put in cortisone. Then they do painblockers on either side of the spine. 3 on each side. Those didn't work for me at all.
So next time - only 1 needle or 2 maybe - right into the spine. Yikes! Sweating just thinking about it.
I just came back from a biopsy on my nose. I have 1 stitch in it and the freezing is starting to come out. Ouch. But I'm very glad it's over and done with. We'll see what the results are.
Thinking of you in beautiful NZ. Someday - I promise. I will visit. But we are really hooked on New Orleans. It's an incredible place!
Hugs and warm thoughts sent over to you dear friend.
She has certainly got the muscles for it. I bet she could throw an anvil 20 yards!
(Wendy A said she can't comment on your blog because she hasn't got a Google account and Geocities.com isn't on the Open ID list)
Wow, what a great smile and happiness for her...those are top-gun awards and a beautiful (heavy maybe, but not for her *smile*) trophy.
Thanks for commenting on my Wordless Wednesday picture of the bookends of my mother's. And, my goodness you touched my heart by remembering that my mom sent me the fridge christmas tree! She lives 9 hours away now and I miss her.
Hope your sciatica is under control with the pain meds.
I forgot to wish you a Happy Belated Birthday..the 22nd was my hubby's birthday too, but we've got 5 years on you! Mine is coming up on Feb. 16. So am an Aquarius, too.
Take care, smile big, scratch Zebby under the chin and listen to him purrrrrrrrr.
