and swear one when I realised I'd dropped a stitch right near the end.
-------
Have put the sock aside while I recover my equalibrium, buy a good quality circular needle of the appropriate needle size and circular length, and wonder at my Paternal Grandmother making socks on straight needles. Dear Dad remembers his Mum knitting them. It is all wonderful until the last few rows .....

...... Special thanks to dear Dad for the loan of his camera, and his close up shots of my hands 'a knitting' ......

Congratulations! But shouldn't there be two of them? They like to pair up me thinks.
Thanks, Gomad. Haven't got the first one right yet. Am muttering and a thinking, and knitting stuff that uses BIG needles in the meantime.......
If only you knew a one legged person in need of A sock. You could stop now and never look back!
Guess I need a magic carpet to zip down and sort this one out for you.
Once you get the hang of it - they're easy. I swear!
btw - I always graft my toes - and I knit them flat - or on 2 needles.
I was just getting to the grafting bit when I realised I had dropped a stitch a couple of rows back. Was at the place of having only a needle on each side.
I still think super nasties to multiple little straight needles that fall out all over the place, and Yay to a circular needle and the magic loop method.
I WILL get there with this pair of socks. And have glorious yarn (75% lovely marino wool) for another four pairs. At the end of that lot I should know how!!!
Super care to Priscilla and Aims,
Mickle, in her muckly bit right now. Thank goodness for Zebbycat and his "I love you, anyway. You are mine, and a very good source of cuddle-up-ness"
Congratulations on joining the sock-knitters society! I LOVE wearing my hand-knit socks. I've always done the 4-needle socks until just recently, when I converted. No, not THAT way - I'm not a firm believer in the magic loop socks.
You're going to love wearing your socks - assuming you get that second one done. And next time, try a wool/bamboo blend. Absolute bliss on your tootsies!
My Grandma used 4 straight needles to knit socks instead of a round needle. This comment is a test whether it works from a celly. Propz Pilgrim
Would you believe, the word verification is "oness"!! seems that blogger knows its about ONE sock. I had to have a chuckle, but just want to say "congratulations". Knitting socks has never been something that I've been game to tackle.
Wild and woolly weather here in south oz at the moment, heading your way !
Keep warm, take care.
Hello Mickle
I remember my Granny in Belfast knitting socks, I tried years ago but thats all it was - a try.
May give it another go sometime - are there patterns for knitting them on 2 kneedles? Must look on the web to see.
Take care
Cathy
oh Cathy - My Grandpa Jim, Mum's Father, was born in Belfast - back in 1899. On their latest visit over there the folks found the house and I have a photo of it I must post.
Mum remembers Irish Gran knitting her own singlets on circular needles with wool that had been washed but not scoured, so it retained all the natural lanolin. Makes for lovely skin on the hands as you knit.
While i've found a few two needle sock patterns I really recommend a circular needle. Use a quite long circular with the magic loop method. Google it - I found really helpfull video classes on the interwebby world.
or we can always approach lovely Mary Z over in Tennessee and darling Aims in Alberta for clues and hints.
Saw shots of the nasty weather in Victoria and even more of it in South Aussie on the TV news. Was fierce weather.
Hope bloggy friends there are okay. We get the tip of it Thursday night, then rainy all day Friday - nowt new here.
dear all - have knitted and then felted a pot mitt and an oven cloth in the meantime. Felting knitted pieces is fun - wash woollen items at a high temp just as you shouldn't!
Loving the results. And hiding them from my darling Zebbycat.
